Program Notes

Daaro Waari is a fantasy on a Sur Daas Bhajan by Dr. Ashwini Bhide Deshpande.

“The Indian concept and sense of “Daaro waari” is difficult to translate in the non-Indian language. An approximation would be “I would renounce a valuable article in favor of something dear to my heart”. “Mukha par Chandra daro vaari” would mean "I would give up the beautiful moon for the Lord’s face...” and the chain of comparison and renunciation between objects of natural beauty and the Lord’s features goes on, never mentioning whose description it is. The song is interspersed with the periodic chanting of “Shri Govind Shyam”, which is not a part of the original text of the song and is an artistic liberty taken by the composer (Ashwini Bhide Deshpande).” -Saili Oak
